Meteorologists, explain this to me please.

My commute to work is just under 4 miles, from south central Edinburgh, heading northwest to west Edinburgh more or less on the dividing line of north/south. A friend commutes a similar distance, but from north Edinburgh he heads south east to a building about a mile southeast of my workplace. We both travelled in at about the same time this morning.

Why did we both have a headwind?

One was a headwind, the other was an inverted tailwind.
