Jonah and the whale

You'll never believe where I've just been. Across the road, signed in as admin. Let me start at the beginning.

Early last winter I had the bright idea that it would be interesting to run C+F. I had no intention of giving up acf. This beast is an entirely different animal to that one, and it would be a challenge to act as keeper to both. So I forwarded the notion to the powers that be and waited.

The powers that be were intrigued and said they'd think about it. They did an awful lot of thinking, because the answer came back just the other day: when could I start?

Appreciate my dilemma: This opportunity dropped into my lap almost out of the blue. How could I turn it down? I'd go in there and shake the place up, but in a good way. Exterminate trolls left right and center. Simultaneous to this I'd be praying that it didn't magically become more attractive to acfers. It's a glaring conflict of interest that I was prepared to deal with because I have a talent (one of my very few) for compartmentalising. This thing could be done, damnit.

It turns out this thing can't be done.

I spent a good part of yesterday preparing to come up to speed with current events across the road, and contemplating the job ahead. The more I ruminated the greater become my unease. Being an administrator - a responsible one, anyway - is like being an astronaut flirting with a black hole: it tugs powerfully whenever you draw near, greedily sucking time itself out of you. And there were other issues, including the fact that I failed in my bid to get the terrible two reinstated. Sorry, guys. At least you've gone to a better place.

I also found myself possessed by a powerful antipathy to my new bailiwick. Every minute I spent there just felt wrong. It was a very draining experience.

The only evidence of my brief career is the missing post by TR, which I rather enjoyed deleting, and moving an abridged version of their T&C and posting guidelines to a more visible place. I also cleared out the mod column on the right, as none of those people were ever active in that capacity anyway. If I was made of sterner stuff I might have held out a little longer and done more.

Jonah entered the whale and was spit out again. Thus endeth his report.

As it happens, Jonah got back into the whale not long after that first post. Couldn't help himself. Decided the money would come in handy. Lasted approximately a month, his chief legacy the reinstatement of the Terrible Two after all, and shooing a few trolls back under their bridges. Nice to get the opportunity to do a bit of good.

C+F was my introduction to cycling forums. I came, I posted. Then I moved on, decided to try my own hand at it. Well, you know.

My last thread has now, with any luck, begun its gentle descent into the archives and thence into the digital crematorium. With it I was hoping to lay to rest any misconceptions about acf. Make it easy peasy for people to ask me directly rather than relying on the usual innuendo. Out of the whale and into the lion's den, I thought. Expected to field questions about "secret" boards (like this one of course), cliquishness, dictatorial excesses, and even personal atrocities.

It hasn't been so bad, knock wood. Some people clearly have a problem with me, but that's OK. I've never groomed myself to win any popularity contests. I aim to be honest, fair, and immensely wealthy. Will settle for two out of three.
