Drawing pins
« on: December 06, 2006 »
I very nearly posted the question of why they are called that.  Then I remembered why I had logged on.  But if anyone knows, do tell.

My front wheel (shod with an elderly armadillo) picked up a drawing pin on the ride to work this morning.  I noticed it because of the click every time the head of the pin hit the road surface.  The tyre (running at about 100psi) stayed fully inflated for the next two miles.

When I arrived at work I couldn't resist gently tugging the drawing pin out of the tyre.  I really enjoyed the sound of the air rushing out in a thin jet.  I carried the wheel in to my desk. It took about 5 minutes for it to stop its hissing.  Somehow I didn't feel the usual despondent sinking feeling I get when I hear that noise.  Am I ill?  Should I have resisted the temptation to remove the pin?

Then my trainee walked in (very late, because she uses the Central Line) and asked "Is that a wheel?"
