Critical Mass (good/bad)

I used to be part of core of maybe 5-10 cyclists who kept CMs going in Leicester every month in the mid 1990's.... On one memorable occasion, we took the CM down one of the main A roads that bisects the residential area to the west of the city. Normally this is completely off limits to the local population without a car since vehicles normally shoot down there at 50mph plus. On this one occasion we managed to block the entire 3 lanes with our convoy. At first, we just had an empty stretch of wide road in front of us, but as people began to realise what was going on, kids started to bring out bikes from their houses and began to ride in circles up and down the dual carriageway. Here was a wide open space, right in front of peoples houses that was normally an off-limits danger area, only to be liberated for half an hour on a Friday evening. Getting such glimpses of how we can change our daily environments for the better makes the whole activity worth it in my opinion.
