Today's young drivers are a generation that has grown up being ferried about by their parents... and probably have done little, if any at all, cycling. As a result, they have not had the opportunity to develop 'road sense' as pedestrians or as young cyclists.

Plus, they are a generation immersed in computer games where as players they fling vehicles around and don't face the consequences of real injury and death - it's just start the game all over again.

And, when it comes to death and injury in real life when the weapon of choice is a motor vehicle, we, via the legal system, treat it as an 'accident' where the person responsible is treated as if they aren't responsible. We read in our media of how 'the car' lost control. No, the car didn't - the driver did. We read of 'dangerous roads' - no the roads are not dangerous, it's the idiots driving like maniacs who are the danger.

As a society we are in denial about the dangers of being stupid in charge of a motor vehicle. Kill someone 'accidentally' with a gun and you'll get a *long* time in jail - kill a cyclist or a pedestrian with a motor vehicle and you'll get a measly fine, short ban and possibly a short time in jail if you've drawn the short straw with your choice of legal shark and judge.

We reap what we have sown.
