Gender Identity Isn’t a Box. It’s a Yardstick.CulturallyBoundGender
Radical feminists have long wondered why transgender people and their allies seem to believe that the radical feminist position is “everyone should act according to sex stereotypes.” But using the metaphor of the yardstick, the nature of the communication breakdown is revealed: the fundamental tenet of mainstream transgender ideology is that human beings should feel free to pick whichever yardstick they prefer.

Letter to The New York Times
Quote from: Carmen
It's not just a conservative issue and for most normal, kind people, it's not about targeting a marginalized group. People across the political spectrum feel uneasy about a militant ideology that often runs counter to what we take to be biological reality and common sense, such as that nearly everyone is born, not assigned, male or female. All too often, this feels less like a plea for tolerance and inclusion and more like an unpleasant agenda.

At my daughter's public school open house, they explained that "healthy gender development" is one of the core learning areas, along with math and reading, and showed us books urging children to question their gender identity. "Misgendering" and "using dead names" are cancellation-level offenses, but meanwhile I'm being told that I'm no longer to referred to as "mother" – "Parent" is preferred – and my "daughter" should now be a gender-neutral "kiddo" with "siblings," not "sisters and brothers." As result of this movement, parents no longer have access to the children's medical records once they're 12. Solely, it appears, to keep us from interfering with all this wonderful, secretive gender questioning.

We're being threatened that if we don't let kids deny basic reality by claiming they are the opposite sex from what they were born, they'll kill themselves. Despite the fact that until 15 years ago, almost nobody changed gender and most people weren't suicidal. For most parents, all this isn't political. It's personal.

As a kid, I remember being so excited about scientific advancement. We were on our way to Mars. We were going to see the darkest parts of the ocean and uncover their secrets. What wonders would I see in my lifetime?

Apparently we've decided that the next great frontier for humanity to gaze into the abyss is the depth of our own fucking navel.

A time is coming when men will go mad, and when they see someone who is not mad, they will attack him, saying, 'You are mad; you are not like us.'

Quote from: Jamillah Moore
Dear SF State community,

Today, San Francisco State finds itself again at the center of a national discussion regarding freedom of speech and expression. Let me begin by saying clearly: the trans community is welcome and belongs at San Francisco State University. Further, our community fiercely believes in unity, connection, care and compassion, and we value different ideas, even when they are not our own. SF State is regularly noted as one of the most diverse campuses in the United States—this is what makes us Gators, and this is what makes us great. Diversity promotes critical discussions, new understandings and enriches the academic experience. But we may also find ourselves exposed to divergent views and even views we find personally abhorrent. These encounters have sometimes led to discord, anger, confrontation and fear. We must meet this moment and unite with a shared value of learning.

Thank you to our students who participated peacefully in Thursday evening’s event. It took tremendous bravery to stand in a challenging space. I am proud of the moments where we listened and asked insightful questions. I am also proud of the moments when our students demonstrated the value of free speech and the right to protest peacefully. These issues do not go away, and these values are very much at our core.

This feels difficult because it is difficult. As you reflect, process, and begin to heal, please remember that there are people, resources and services available and ready to receive our Gator community, including faculty, staff members, coaches and mentors who are here to support you.

Campus resources are also available:
1Equity and Community Inclusion
1Counseling and Psychological Services
1Dean of Students Office

The well-being of the SF State campus community remains our priority.

Sincerely,
Jamillah Moore, Ed.D.
Vice President for Student Affairs & Enrollment Management

As someone says, this is basically a psyops – "we all saw the violence, we’ve been watching it for months, for years, but they deny what we see."

"Their actions are peaceful by definition. Opposing them is defined as violence. See how that works?"

Quote from: Misstache
I’ve protested at events and been at events that were protested in turn - people turning out to protest Bush during the Iraq War, pro life people protesting and being protested, Israel/Palestine protests, literal actual Holocaust deniers speaking, people protesting corporations and oil and politicians from genocidal regimes. People who have lost loved ones to violence are at many of these protests and I’ve never, ever, seen this kind of energy and I’ve stood beside people protesting a politician in a regime that murdered their family members. Normally people - including the people protesting you - chant, hold signs, yell “shame” and read out either demands or accusation. But punching people, screaming obscenities, the level of hysteria and rage (and yes, it seemed to be largely from young women in that clip), the following of her to shout misogynist insults, the absolute shrieking, frothing rage - I genuinely haven’t seen that. What is it about this issue that genuinely unhinges people or that teaches this is the necessary response? Is it the rhetoric? The crowd energy? I genuinely don’t know.

'Mobself', I've seen it called.

Why does the census say there are more trans people in Newham than Brighton?Michael Biggs
If places like Newham and Brent had so few inhabitants willing to sign a pro-transgender petition, what accounts for their prominence in the census transgender figures? What these boroughs have are many immigrants for whom English is a second language, and who are therefore liable to be confused by a convoluted question on gender identity. The strongest predictor of the transgender population across 331 local authorities, as measured by the census, is the proportion of people whose main language is not English…

How did the ONS manage to produce such implausible data on gender identity? In ‘a case study of policy capture’, the statisticians were guided by lobby groups like Stonewall.

Why capitalism loves transgenderism – Brendan O'Neill
The Communist Party of Britain’s statement has broken the internet – well, that small portion of it that is interested in the internecine battles of the British left. The publication of its gender statement has ‘resulted in a million views and our website being zapped’, the CPB says. Time for new servers, comrades? It’s good that the CPB has made itself the communist cat among the identitarian pigeons, the fox of materialism in the chicken coop of postmodern bollocks. Because it just might give rise to a discussion, or at least some thought, on why the hell the modern left has aligned itself with something as irrational, illiberal, anti-women, anti-science and harmful to working-class families as the ideology of transgenderism.

Progressives Across Nation Locked Out Of Accounts After CAPTCHA Asks 'Select All Squares That Contain A Woman'Babylon Bee
In response to the outcry, the company behind the new CAPTCHA challenge defended the rigorous testing process for each picture. "We have tons of data showing that three-year-olds can reliably pick out the woman in the image," said software engineer Gary Marsh. "So can the vast majority of household pets. The program is merely designed to check for the bare minimum level of intelligence to be human. We literally cannot make it any dumber."

I don't do Reddit. It's mostly captured by genderist moderators and admins, and life is too short to be navigating an enormous patchwork of fiefdoms. The very bedrock of it, the upvoting/downvoting, doesn't appeal. If a link points there, fine. Somehow I ended up here, because of course I would:

The way in which we deal with some of the concerns in the trans debate says a lot about our ability as a society (and that of media institutions) to be honest, draw appropriate boundaries, and stand against an angry, fraudulent, self-righteous movement.

Quote from: Franzera
A troubling aspect of it, outside of "They're genociding kids!!!!" Twitter hysteria, is that this stuff is an offshoot of post-modernist academic gender theory. If you accept the concept of genderswapping, then it's a tacit acceptance of gender theory, which I find incompatible with living a reality filled with observable, material concerns. It sets a bad precedent, because:

- It obfuscates the commonly understood meanings of words. Forget "what is a woman?", what is sex? Now we have biological sex, chromosomal sex, natal sex, hormonal sex (X years on HRT, as defined by some sports organizations), assigned sex, reassigned sex (for those who have changed their secondary sexual characteristics), legal sex, and identified sex.

- It divorces sex from gender. It emphasizes gender as more important.

- It erases same-sex attraction and turns gays into homogenderuals, as if gays were being tossed off buildings because they liked another person who inhabited the same social role as their own.

- It creates the concept of "genital preference". Then you have a situation where a straight man who likes vagina is not allowed to reject a date whom he discovers has a neovagina, or else he's 'phobic. It promotes the idea that required "disclosing" is problematic and unnecessary for consent.

- It is intolerant of non-conforming behaviors and interests. When gender exists on a Barbie to GI Joe spectrum, Billy Elliot isn't allowed to like ballet and still be a boy. Sandy Cheeks isn't allowed to be a rootin', tootin' astronaut and cowgirl.

- It denies material reality, and demands people deny the evidence of their own eyes for the sake of the woo, and suppress their own boundaries. When an expectant mother in a maternity ward sees a large, broad-shouldered figure wandering around the hallways, obviously not dressed like a staff member, she is supposed to feel bad because her natural instincts told her to be wary and made her "assume someone's gender" and intentions. No physical traits or biological processes are in any way correlated to the authentic soul self, and in this brave new world, a "mother" can be anyone who identifies as one.

- It allows NB and xenogenders to flourish. In our reality, society and institutions are structured around the accommodation of physical needs when it comes to providing healthcare, collecting demographic data, earmarking funds and creating policies to address crime and safety, life expectancy, working hours, employment, parental leave, child benefits, education, and housing. When official census data is bloated with self-reported gender feelings, it becomes nigh impossible to develop policy meant to alleviate disparities between material conditions. But I guess you can say the men's mental health crisis is solved if all the men have converted to frogselves!

Personally I think some "They're genociding kids!!!!" hysteria is called for. Nevertheless I very quickly got hooked on Franzera, and there went the evening…

It’s such an intellectual sinkhole. I can’t believe this but I’ve been following it closely for over 2 years even though it doesn’t affect me personally at all.

I’ve just never seen a mass psychosis like this so it’s really hard not to be fascinated but I have made myself cut down now and then.

It's pretty much the proxy for a large set of ideological battles and if you engage on any one of them you end up mired in trans stuff.

Last year Jesse Singal took a deep dive into citations:

"Science Vs" Cited Seven Studies To Argue There’s No Controversy About Giving Puberty Blockers And Hormones To Trans Youth. Let’s Read Them.
Quote from: Eileen Chollet
I'm reminded of the Senate Select Committee report about intelligence failures leading up to the Iraq War. The intelligence community had a few flawed pieces of information, but as analysts started citing them and then getting cited by other analysts and then those analysts getting cited. Suddenly, you have a consensus that there's an abundance of iron-clad information just from the mass circle of citations.

Credit where it's due, I found that at Mumsnet. Where else.
Quote from: Nepeta
I sometimes feel I have skipped to a different alternative reality where feminism never existed in the past but rigid sex roles continued and now some people are allowed an escape clause by changing their box, but this cannot be available for the vast majority of women as that would collapse the system.

Speaking of alternative realities,

I hear this ringing in my ears whenever I post the TRUTH, brothers and sisters. Today's truth:

John Scalzi is an idiot.
https://whatever.scalzi.com/2020/06/11/generation-x-and-trans-lives/
(I don't think he's seen the light since he wrote that almost three years ago.)

He doubled down on his idiocy in the comments section; having no defensible position, he simply fell back on executive privilege.

This subject really brings it

it

Insults don't help? Who knew.

(Yew forests?)

Still, one has to wonder about the quality of research* into anything Scalzi writes.

Magdalen Berns saw him coming.

*As part of my 'research' into Scalzi – in tongs because a quick search ("John Scalzi is an idiot") hardly qualifies – I did come across this:

https://whatever.scalzi.com/2006/06/25/john-scalzi-egotistical-toady-loving-asshole/

I'd say well done, but I'm not calling him an asshole, just an idiot. There's a big difference.

out in people.

The gender salvation army is forever marching into discussions screaming "Educate yourself!" They never seem to like the results when people actually do.
