The good fight
« on: December 17, 2012 »

In 2000 Alex McVitty was killed by the driver of this cement mixer in London. Her mother Cynthia Barlow grieved,

then did something about it which has almost certainly saved other cyclists from a similar fate. Though her story has been out there for a while, I only learned of it recently while watching her moving contribution to the BBC documentary The War on Britain's Roads. It wasn't the kind of show that would normally attract me, despite the fact that I'm a committed roadie, because thinking about something I love doing as battle doesn't enhance the experience for me.

I may be sitting this war out, but here's to you, Cynthia.

Lewis Dediare may be an amped up version of zen-sucking Helmetcam Man, Highway Code overlay à la The Terminator in his shades, but his heart is in the right place, and I admire the way he flies outside social norms. As Warner Wolf (not to be confused with Wolverine) used to say, let's go to the videotape.

Sorry, wrong tape.
